The Problem of Dishonesty

Frequently, I am confronted by the extreme oddities of human behavior. For instance, why is it that so many people today feel that lying about their situation will make for a better outcome? More times than not, the end result seems to be worse than what the consequence would have been if one had been forthcoming with the truth in the first place.
